Marseille metropolitan area
The Marseille Urban Development Corporation (EPAEM) has been involvedin every stage of the project, which has four major aims:
- to diversify the economy;
- to become a shining centre of culture and education;
- to enhance the quality of urban planning and development;
- to promote social development.
Ambitious targets
- + 10 to 12,000 inhabitants
- + 20,000 new jobs over 15 years
- A forwardlooking redevelopment programme featuring 1.1 to 1.3 million sq. m. of new floor space, of which 600,000 sq. m. of commercial property, 400,000 sq. m. of housing, 100,000 sq. m. of retail outlets and public facilities, as well as 6,000 renovated housing units, 20 hectares of public spaces, and the restructuring of road infrastructures for traffic in transit.
Employment and investment
Since 1995, 3,600, jobs have been created and over 40% of jobs have been renewed.Around 50% of the companies that have located to the area are foreign. In 2003, 40,000 sq. m. of office space were delivered.Culture and training
The Institute of Advanced Internet Applications (IAAI) opened in October 2001. And in 2008, the museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations is due to be inaugurated.High quality social and urban development
The construction of 330 flats is under way. An agreement has been signed for the upgrading of 2,600 dwellings. And OPAHs have been set up on six sites for the renovation of 6,000 flats. Public spaces are changing: the redevelopment of the port is nearing completion; the Major road tunnel skirts round the Joliette; and high-speed trains (TGV) arrive at Saint-Charles station, whose entire neighbourhood has been regenerated.
